Tithi calendar, next 30 days

Tithi shown is the one prevailing at sunrise in New Delhi. Gold = Ekadashi, silver = Purnima, dark = Amavasya, blue = Chaturthi.

What is a tithi?

A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis, 15 in the bright half (Shukla paksha) ending with Purnima and 15 in the dark half (Krishna paksha) ending with Amavasya. Because the Moon’s speed varies, a tithi lasts between about 19 and 26 hours.

The five groups of tithis

GroupTithisNature
Nanda1, 6, 11Joy; good for celebrations
Bhadra2, 7, 12Auspicious; good for foundations
Jaya3, 8, 13Victory; good for competition
Rikta4, 9, 14Empty; avoided for new beginnings
Purna5, 10, 15Full; good for completion

Tithi at sunrise

Festivals and fasts usually follow the tithi prevailing at sunrise (udaya tithi). Sometimes a tithi starts and ends between two sunrises (kshaya tithi) or covers two sunrises (vriddhi tithi), which is why calendars occasionally differ by a day.
