What is a nakshatra?
The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and every nakshatra into four padas of 3°20′. The Moon passes through one nakshatra in about a day. Your birth nakshatra decides your Vimshottari dasha sequence, your gana, yoni and nadi for marriage matching, and the first syllable traditionally used for a baby’s name. In Tamil this is known as your natchathiram.
Nakshatra and pada
The pada narrows your birth star to a quarter. Each pada maps to a navamsa sign and to one naming syllable. For example, Ashwini pada 1 gives the syllable “Chu”.
How the calculation is done
We compute the Moon’s sidereal longitude (Lahiri ayanamsa) for your birth moment and divide it into nakshatras and padas. Because the Moon moves about 13° a day, the birth time matters if you were born near a nakshatra change.
