What is Vimshottari dasha?
Vimshottari is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods. It starts from the lord of your birth nakshatra and runs in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. The balance of the first dasha depends on how far the Moon had travelled through your nakshatra.
Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar
- Mahadasha: the main period of a planet, lasting 6 to 20 years.
- Antardasha (bhukti): sub-periods inside each Mahadasha, in the same planetary order.
- Pratyantar dasha: sub-sub-periods lasting days to months, used for precise timing.
How to read your current dasha
A dasha gives the results of its planet: its natural meaning, the houses it rules and the house it occupies in your chart. The Antardasha lord adds its own flavour. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn then decide when the promised results arrive.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my current Mahadasha?
Enter your birth date, time and place above. The running Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar appear at the top of the result.
What is dasa bhukti?
Dasa bhukti is the South Indian name for Mahadasha and Antardasha.
Which Mahadasha is best?
It depends on your chart. A planet that rules good houses and is well placed gives a good dasha, whichever planet it is.
Why does birth time matter for dasha?
The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, which shifts the dasha balance at birth by weeks or months.
