Ornaments & gems that steady your emotions

In Jyotish each emotion is linked to a planet. These are the traditional ornaments, gems, metals and mantras used to calm or strengthen it.

Primary gems (ruby, blue sapphire, coral, emerald, yellow sapphire, diamond, hessonite) should be worn only after a chart check, since a gem for an unfavourable planet can backfire. Rudraksha, silver and crystal malas are generally safe. These are traditional practices, not a substitute for medical or mental-health care.

How gemstones are linked to emotions

In Jyotish, the mind is ruled by the Moon, courage and anger by Mars, desire by Venus and Rahu, anxiety by Mercury and Rahu, and heaviness or stress by Saturn. Each planet has a gemstone (ratna), a metal, a weekday and a mantra. Wearing the right one is believed to strengthen a weak planet or calm an overactive one.

Primary gems vs upratna

The nine primary gems (navaratna) are ruby, pearl, red coral, emerald, yellow sapphire, diamond, blue sapphire, hessonite and cat’s eye. They are powerful and expensive, so astrologers suggest them only after checking the chart. Affordable substitutes (upratna) such as moonstone for pearl, amethyst for blue sapphire and citrine for yellow sapphire are gentler options.
