What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, horoscope chart or Kundali, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Vedic astrology divides it into twelve houses starting from the Lagna, the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon. Each house governs an area of life, and the planets placed in it colour that area.

How this calculator works

  • Planet positions are calculated astronomically for your birth moment and converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in Indian astrology.
  • The Lagna is calculated from your birth place’s latitude and longitude, so choose the nearest city.
  • Houses use the whole-sign system: the Lagna sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on.

Vedic vs Western birth chart

Western (tropical) charts measure signs from the spring equinox. Vedic (sidereal) charts measure them against the fixed stars. Today the difference is about 24°, so most planets fall one sign earlier in a Vedic chart. If you want your Western Sun, Moon and rising signs, use the Sun, Moon & Rising calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this birth chart calculator free?

Yes. The chart, planet positions and houses are free, with no sign-up needed.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the Lagna and houses, yes. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so even a 15-minute error can matter near a sign boundary. Planet signs are reliable even if the time is approximate.

Which house system is used?

Whole-sign houses from the Lagna, as in traditional Parashari astrology.

What is the difference between a birth chart and a Kundli?

They are the same thing. Kundli or Kundali is the Hindi word for a Vedic birth chart.
